Design Statement

The intention of mounting the production of the Normal Heart was indeed timely and significant. While the play is set originally in New York in the 80s, the play mirrors the growing number of HIV and AIDS cases, this time in the Philippines. The sound design begins with the sound of a steady heartbeat that gradually gets faster and faster until it reaches a flatline. This heartbeat echoes throughout the play in varied speeds (sometimes slow, sometimes fast) to signify the various emotions experienced in various stages in life leading to death. The sound of the heartbeat in this play is combined with other ambient sound elements in order to set the pace and mood of the scenes, and create a sense of memory. The music score was significantly composed and recorded in one take. It exhibits imperfections but nonetheless mirrors memories of the composer as he remembers his friends who have died of the disease as well as those living with HIV-AIDS.
