Violet - The Musical
Category: Set Design
The first Australian Production of “Violet – The Musical”, premiered at the Hayes Theatre, Sydney, Australia on December 4th, 2015. After a successful Sydney Season, “Violet” transferred to Melbourne for a season at Chapel of Chapel. Produced by Blue Saint Productions and directed by Mitchell Butel, “Violet” was nominated for 7 Sydney Theatre Awards, including Best Set Design, eventually winning 3. “Violet” tells the story of a young woman’s journey of discovery, both as a physical journey across the USA, and one of her own self-discovery. There were numerous design challenges involved in this production. Both performance venues were completely different; both being converted theatre venues, I had everything from Fire Safety egress to lack of Load In facilities to take into consideration. As our set design budget was extremely small, the director and I, decided to create an evocative playing space rather than a literal. We settled on the concept of a “journey” as our metaphor. A false perspective road sweeping up into a stylised Greyhound Bus, combined with a roadside billboard of an American open road, were all slanted to a single vanishing point. Simple devices such as a swing out bed, a curtain of red mylar strips and a selection of 1960’s chairs, created all the locations.
