Design Statement Persephone

Persephone is part of a double bill production of Iolanta/Persephone directed by Peter Sellars. Both narratives take us on a gut wrenching journey; a search for light and truth in a troubling world.

The dance troupe from Amrita Performing Arts in Phnom Penh, Cambodia personifies all of the emotions of a dark and troubled time. Traditional Khmer dance was nearly extinguished in the genocidal madness of the Khmer Rouge. In this staging of Persephone they represent the emotional response to the tumult, despair, and darkness of difficult times. They represent the purpose of suffering and continued toil in the face of adversity.

In Persephone, the main characters and dancers are clothed in bright colours. They are in stark contrast to the pensive lighting and set design. Pluto is in red representing anger and torment. Mercury is in a neutral grey representing work and toil. Persephone and the spirit of Persephone are both clothed in blue representing calm and acceptance. Eumolpe is clothed in white representing frailness and vulnerability. Demeter is yellow representing harvest, light and re-birth. They are archetypes of torment, toil, vulnerability, acceptance, and new birth. They are our bright candles guiding us to through the darkness into light.
