Design Statement

The Kitchen
Written by Arnold Wesker

Set in England in a 1950’s large commercial kitchen, the play portrays a diverse group of low-income immigrants. Set soon after WWII, bitter hostilities remain and are represented from all sides, yet the various ethnic groups must come together in one workplace much like an industrial factory and work together. The heat of the kitchen and close quarters intensify the ethnic differences and contrasting personalities. The galley style/step down arrangement allows the audience to become spectator in a sporting match between opposing sides. The design compresses and confines the action to help create tension from all sides. There is little room to catch your breath in this fast-paced, spatially revolving arena for a cast of 35 performers during the busiest and hottest time of the work day. Designing full swinging doors, industrial equipment, cleaning supplies, stainless surfaces and endless utensils, are all carefully chosen accouterments to resemble a factory equipped to efficiently handle the demand of the intense and divided workplace.
