Design Statement

"The Burial at Thebes" is a modern adaptation and translation of Sophocles' original play, Antigone", by playwright Seamus Heaney. The director desired a blend of Greco-Roman architecture combined with visual elements from ancient Etruscan Tomb decoration and art. Rather than set before the entrance to King Creon's palace, the goal was to place it on the outskirts post-war torn city of Thebes, in a sacred Necropolis. The second directive was that there must be many entrances to the space, some hidden and some readily apparent and most should require the characters to first ascend up into the enclosed space and then to descend down into the central acting area. I wanted to create a sense that the environment had been at this site for generations, but has been cared for and has aged and weathered by time, rather than neglect desiccated ruins or destroyed in battle. The central mural was researched, designed and painted by student assistant designer, Cecily May DeForest, who was included in all phases of the design period.
