Design Statement

Based on the play’s name, I began the proposal for The Clean House with an all-white stage design to represent the concept of cleanliness. I wanted the concept to follow some of the absurdities in the play by painting all elements in stage in white. With this initial concept, and inspired by my love for contemporary art, I took Yayoi Kusama´s Kids turn white room into explosion of color piece [before the kids intervened] as a metaphoric reference that helped me decide that everything in the set should be either white or transparent. I wanted to further emphasize the concept of whiteness though the lighting, and proposed the use of lighting elements to symbolize specific things, for example a fluorescent lamp for a cancer-curing tree brought from Alaska, cellular phones light for telephones, and lanterns to light walls. Through light and scenography, I wanted to convey the emotions in the play.

I studied architecture and a post graduate degree on ephemeral architecture and began my professional career in architectural lighting design. I collaborated designing three exhibitions at the Centro Cultural de la Embajada de México in France while attending the Interchange Program SEP / Ministère de l´Education Nationale de la Recherche et de la Technologie.

In 2000 I began working with Alejandro Luna [Honorable Scenographer OISTAT] designing opera, theatre, dance and cinema in Mexico, Colombia, France and USA. I have participated several times in the Festival de México as technical director in set and lighting for Romeo Castelucci, Edouard Lock and Robert Lepage.

I have developed my set, lighting and costume design career in theatre, dance and opera for directors such as José Caballero, José Sanchis Sinisterra, Guillermo Heras, Alberto Lomnitz, Enrique Singer, Arturo Gama, Ignacio Ortiz and Hernán del Riego in Mexico and David Korish & Roxana Ávila in Costa Rica.

In 2005 I was granted the Jóvenes Creadores FONCA fellowship in set design.

Since 2011 I am a member of Sistema Nacional de Creadores de Arte, a national distinction to those who have given Mexico prestige in the field of arts.
