Design Statement

This is a fantastic story that is set in Trinidad and Tobago, a tropical nation in Caribbean.
Designing a production based on Caribbean culture served as an eye opening experience for me. I was fascinated by its tough slavery history and its wild legendary creatures within its hundreds of miles of forests, plants and the ocean around it. For the native Caribbean residents there, the jungle is a maize full of challenge, terror, and meanwhile, an adventure wonderland too. Different types of fairies and deities live there, led by the master of forest - Papa Bios, an old male fairy covered with tree leaves.
The director, Henry Mutto, originally from Trinidad, expressed his version to me patiently and artistically. When it comes to costume design, the challenge was expressing this imaginative characters through diverse textures, colors and shapes. More importantly, make sure they are unified in a same visual world. I was so happy when I heard positive feedback of audience from Trinidad and Tobago.
