Design Statement

A famous quote from Angels in America, “The World Only Spins Forward,” was my inspiration for this terribly beautiful work by Frederico Garcia Lorca. Blood Wedding is a story of the awful repercussions that can result from old grudges and an attempt to stop the natural progression of youth. Through his deceptively simple story telling, Lorca demonstrates how we as humans can, through simple and honest communication, avoid so much of the dolor we witness in the world.

In the projection design for Blood Wedding, we selected the wild horses to represent freedom in its many forms, most especially the wildness of youth. The flowing water, which was used previous to the wedding scene shows the constant progression of time and events. The final image is of the “Man in the Moon,” for which we used live video projection of the actor voicing the role. This allowed us to accomplish the visual goal of grounding the prophecy in a natural object while still maintaining the live relationship between the characters.
