Design Statement

When I first started thinking about directing and designing Faust five years ago I knew instantly how I would stage making Faust-the-old-man young again: the performers of Faust and Mephistopheles would exchange their souls/puppets. At the same time my mind was struck by the image of the gigantic divine eye we look through upon the World, the Earth and the characters and their stories. That image has eventually become the set of the show; “the idea of the eye” was also supported by the animated digital projections.
The puppets resembled the iconic images of the characters, which mostly came directly from the medieval times. The puppeteers were dressed in evening dress to suggest the issues of the story are relevant to all times; that concept was also supported by animated projections. The script written together with Anatoly Yurchenko featured a very careful incorporation of animation and a very busy music score. Since the emphasis remained on puppets, the animated moving images were largely silhouettes. This time, I decided to utilize the front projections in order to keep the vibrancy of the colors.
