Design Statement

The show is based on the poetry and paintings by the great Ukrainian national poet and artist, Taras Shevchenko (1814-1861) and dedicated to the bi-centennial of his birth. The director, Oleksandr Inozemtsev has identified shadow theatre as his stylistic choice. I decided to use the shadows of the actors and the shadow puppets for the narrative component of the production and animated rear-projected Shevchenko’s iconic paintings for the foreground. I designed the shadow puppets for the central scene of the show based on the satirical poem, The Dream. The poem is a sarcastic take on a heavily bureaucratised colonial state; at the time when the show was produced the poem was perceived as reflection of the current political situation.
I suggested to use the video of one of the fallen heroes of Ukrainian revolution of 2013-14, Serhiy Nigoyan, reciting one of Shevchenko’s poem’s as the symbolic ending of the show.
