The Last Five Years

Design Statement

The show’s storytelling is very unusual as for most of the typical musicals; it is structured as two soliloquies told by Jamie in the chronological order and by Cathy, in the reverse chronological order. Thus, the show asks for a highly stylized design approach. The director of the show, Carl Pucl and I found inspiration in the image of a broken mirror. The set consisted of black and white abstracted platforms – some of them were cantilevered to resemble the river piers – and off-white translucent “shards”, the symbolic representation of mirror or ice. Since the set was intentionally monochromatic, the costumes, props and lighting featured carefully selected bold colors connected to the development of characters and their stories.
