Design Statement

Viy, the iconic story by Mykola Gogol deals with destiny, supernatural forces, the traditional Ukrainian mythology and the romanticism of the past. Eugene Himmelfarb, the director of the show, found his inspiration in Gogol’s personal life and issues of gender struggle; thus, he interwove the story of Adam and Eve into the script. We decided the keep the “real” characters performed by life actors; the ghosts and monsters became the transparent silk puppets; the humorous commentary was delivered by the small puppets of the traditional romantic Ukrainian Vertep mystery theatre; the shadow puppets helped create the flying effects; the additional stories were told by the means of life actors performing shadow theatre. For that, I created the screen shaped as a gigantic Moon for act one. The church painted on transparent scrim was the major scenic element of act two; it allowed for the magical transition from the exterior to the interior look. Additionally, the set featured the skeletal altar and traditional church paintings placed on the side calipers of the stage.
The peasant’s costumes were period-inspired but stylized to look like freshly-plowed soil; that was achieved by inverted/visible seams.
The lighting incorporated various effects and extremely precise focusing achieved by custom-made “barn doors” attached to “top hats.” For the first time at that company, I used a combination of the incandescent and LED lights and had to deal with the challenge of balancing of the fixtures of such different types.
