Design Statement

Immigration as a determinant of personal identity was at once the initial motivation to produce the show and one of the main sources of inspiration for the set. Director and scenographer, both Mexican, both immigrants on opposite sides of the world, communicating online and working with an Argentinian cast and crew; with no budget, wages or rehearsal space. Nothing but the determination to produce a new form of theatre in a city where the commercial offer surpasses Broadway’s.

Drawing inspiration from Mesopotamian Ziggurat and Escher’s geometries, the set created a revolving path that allowed the characters to appear in constant motion like Penrose steps, a number of slits through which characters could appear, and a wooden ladder used as a second vantage point. It was at the same time buildings, streets, an elevator, a tent, the desert, a basement and the inside of a bottle; constantly changing like a feverish dream in a 5x5m stage.

It created an unspoken code with the spectators. The more it got stripped, the more we got to play with the audience’s imagination. It was not necessary to depict the object of desire because the object of desire was already in the audience.
