Design Statement

Adolf Shapiro and Vladimir Anshon have a long and deep connection with Estonia, but this is the first time for them to stage an Estonian play.
In “Return to Father,” Madis Kõiv uses his unique poetic style to weave together pieces from different times, mainly focusing on the 60-year-old Homecomer’s memories about his family and home in the small town of Estonia of 1930 and 1940. It is one of the best known plays by Madis Kõiv, who has already become a classic among Estonian playwrights. “Return to Father” was first staged by Priit Pedajas at the Estonian Drama Theatre in 1993 and in the recent spirit of collaboration between the two theatres, the leading role in Shapiro’s production is played by Lembit Ulfsak, actor of the Estonian Drama Theatre. Idyll of provincial life, cloudless childhood and World War II. The debris of the family, home and memory. The living and the dead meet in one space of memories, in which time does not go in a straight line. The past fits in the keyhole of the old door, and the windows- boats sail along the river of memories.
