Design Statement

The vertical lighting strips in What is Sex?, a modernised version of Dream of the Red Chamber, defining the space a sense of modern. These strips like cracks on the walls and floor, leading audiences to peek into the Grandview Garden.

This transitional space, defined by high walls and voidness, comes alive organically when all the windows and doors are lit. Different characters confessing their anxieties through those orange, cyan, bright red and lavender, bringing definition to these chambers.

My heart ache every time when I see the scene between Lin Daiyu and Jia Baoyu, the two main characters being left alone after the huge sack of the mansions. Hushes after chaos, the lights becoming still and solitude, detaching them from the collapsing world outside. Sadly and gradually only the blood red remains, like the blossoming roses in Daiyu’s hands, imprinted forever in Baoyu’s mind.
