Design Statement

The play explores connections within modern society and, ironically, the disconnect and loneliness which can result from being female and consumed by technology.
The white walls of the set, where thoughts can be added and removed with pen, evoke the blank page of the virtual internet screen. Platforms suggest her bedroom furniture however, these are simplified, Ikea-like, uniformed and grey. They house a number of her personal items: clothes, balloons, food; her identity. Her microphone gives her confidence to speak to the world employing a different persona.
The various interferences from social media (Facebook, WhatsApp, text message & email) are accessible through these ‘platforms’ in her room. She jumps onto each one to open and read her messages. Initially this is manageable until she spirals in her thoughts and must communicate by jumping on her vertical shelves to avoid the rising sea levels in her head…

Sarah Beaton

Sarah studied Design for Stage at The Royal Central School of Speech & Drama, graduating in 2011 with First Class Honours. Later that year she was awarded the Linbury Prize for Stage Design.
From 2016-2017 she was the Designer On Attachment at The Old Vic Theatre. During this time, she developed three new plays and designed an interactive App with The Old Vic and the British Council. Her work has been exhibited at The National Theatre, World Stage Design (Cardiff) and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
Sarah has designed for a variety of venues including the Lilian Baylis Studio, Manchester Royal Exchange, Trafalgar Studios, The Oxford Playhouse, The Lowry, Howard Assembly Rooms, Derby Theatre, The Bunker and Altes Shauspielhaus (Stuttgart).
She is an Associate Artist of Engineer Theatre Collective and a visiting lecturer at the Royal Central School of Speech & Drama.
