Selected Category: Lighting Design

Category: Projection and multi-media Design, Lighting Design

Design Statement

“They Have Big Voices Where the Universe Ends is a collective conversation, a dialogue, a confrontation, a comforting silence. The performers are actively listening, both inwardly and outwardly, expressing ideas and sensations, alternately subtly and obviously, in an effort to understand, to be heard and to never stop questioning.”

Choreographer Erica Gionfriddo
Aspiring to create a piece where light played as a character the media (projections & lighting) designer and choreographer worked together to involve the dancers in a dynamic, and intentional world. The projections and lighting asserted another layer of communication where in each performer experiences both spatial constriction and expansion. The audience’s perception of the piece was also guided, often times obscuring the stage and the performers.
Approaching projection as a lighting tool was a question posed by the designer in order to investigate the feasibility of media as a performer.

Lacey Erb

Lacey Erb is a projection designer who is intrigued by how light and shadow shape our environment and how projections and movement tracking can be used to manipulating visual perceptions of our world.
Erb’s design work encompasses projection and lighting design for theatre, opera, and dance, as well as event, space and installation design. Her recent work includes projection designs with the ZACH Theatre (TX), The Butler Opera Center (TX), Dance Repertory Theatre (TX), UT Austin (TX), and a new work with The Moving Company (MN). She is designer and technical director for Louder Than Words Dancetheatre (CO). Her MFA thesis project 'Reflective Impulse' was featured at South By Southwest Interactive (SXSW) in March. Erb has the pleasure of assisting Broadway projection designer Sven Ortel on the upcoming 'Roman Holiday'.
