Design Statement

In Gravity, the pieces were related to the dancers’ stories, showing not only joyful but distressing memories.
 choreographed by An-Li Su
The dance dealt with the relationships among people. The lighting focused on dancers’ interaction and highlighted various sections to tell apart their relationships.

choreographed by Yi-Wen Cheng
Norbit is a movie about a man who was bullied in his childhood. The dance also told the story of the dancer’s memory about being bullied. It was the shadow on the backdrop that implied the shades in dancer’s heart. When he faced the shadow, he was talking to himself. And finally, he looked back and released it after the dance.
 choreographed by Lucas VIALLEFOND
Drawing from the Le Petit Prince, the dance portrayed two dancers’ affection toward each other. To display the process of their sentimental change, the lighting made time floating from blue night sky to golden morning sunshine and tried to lead audience to dancers’ stories.

Cai Ru Dai

Cai-Ru Dai was born in Pingtung, Taiwan. She is now majoring in Lighting Design at Dept. of Theatrical Design and Technology, Taipei National University of Arts.
Cai-Ru first met theatre at the age of twelve as a Taiwanese Opera actress and started her performance life since then. Interested in acting, she tried several kinds of performance such as drama, dancing, and Chinese Cross Talk. In 2013, during her freshman year at university, she discovered her passion for lighting design.
Cai-Ru started working with professional choreographers in 2016, and it was the time that she designed Gravity. For her, lighting is not only a material but a performer. She is now trying to combine lighting with her experience of acting, and make it breathe with actors or dancers on stage.
