A Dream of Red Pavilions

Category: Costume Design

Design Statement

Regarded as one of the ‘Four Great’ novels of China, A Dream of Red Pavilions (紅樓夢) is the love story between Bao Yu (Precious Jade) and Dai Yu (Dark Jade) in 18th century China.
This Lunar New Year of 2016, Pan Asian Repertory Theatre in New York City has premiered this work that is little-known outside of Asia. My costume design to create and produce this celebrated Chinese classic was incorporating elements of traditional 18th century details as well as modern fashion styles, in order to adapt it for an American audience. The Metropolitan Museum Exhibition in New York City, 'China: Through the Looking Glass,' inspired me to explore traditional Chinese dress aesthetics and Western fashion. My design approach for this world premiere production, A Dream of Red Pavilions, was to reflect Chinese costume imagery in a modern fashionable sense to present newly created look in front of American audience. -Hyun Sook Kim-
