Design Statement

Initially set in medieval Byzantine, this interpretation would focus on the religious, moral and sexual dilemmas of the protagonist, rather than trying to relay a pictorial, historic fantasy. The opera is literally set inside his head, the period indicated in the costumes, relates to the time of composition, 1927.
The design and realisation of the set implied using new 3d design and fabrication technologies, in a workflow that opens new doors in operatic design.
The intricate lighting design, with several light sources inside the head, was done by Jon Clark.
Based on the digital model, Luke Halls invented the projection designs, mapped to the rotating head.
