Design Statement

90 Breaths explores the relationship between mothers & daughters against the backdrop of communication & technology today.
Strings are the main element of this design. They were connected between the celling and the chairs, like a half soul of the performance because the strings are like a character in it. Performers interact with the strings by walking through, cutting and dragging them. Where the strings go, there could be annoyance, sorrow, solicitude or happiness, etc.
Although some strings were cut during the performance, the connections do not disappear totally. Like Li Yu said, what cannot be cut, nor raveled, is the sorrow of separation: Nothing tastes like that to the heart and some audiences thought, the strings are like the umbilical cord that connects mothers and their children.
Some of the strings are stretched to the auditorium, which is aiming to give another dimension to the relationship between the performers and audiences.

Wenjiao Wang

I had been receiving traditional Chinese arts training since 5 years old. I am good at Chinese calligraphy and painting while also good at oil painting and watercolor. I did my BA at National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts and now I am doing my MFA at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. I used to be an assistant for Zhang Wu who is an associate professor in National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts and at same time he is also an outstanding drama practitioner and avant-garde artist. I have assisted him for an opera called Il Barbiere di Siviglia (National Centre for the Performance Arts production) in 2012 and a play named To live (National Theatre of China production) in 2013.
