The Plague in Venice

Design Statement

Our adaptation of “The Plague In Venice” depicted the downfall of the city at the hands of an anthropomorphized Plague- an allegory for the moral corruption that destroys the city from the inside out.

The greatest threat to Venice today is from the very water that once defined its beauty. In the world depicted in "Plague", the waters that surround and run through the city are also what isolates it from the rest of the world. Water is an instrument of both death and self-obsession.Our team was interested in holding up a mirror up to artifice and over-indulgence, creating a world of what appeared to be glimmering waters and opulent mirrors, but with death and decay laying just beneath the surface.

The structure of commedia, with its antithetical pairs of characters, provided similar revelation through reflection and contrast. The revised scenario also built on these themes further in "lazzi" and shadowplays that incorporated reflective scenic elements.

We composed a fractured landscape that was constantly shifting- broken down into multi-functional units that could be manipulated by the performers. The design encompassed the beauty and degradation of Venetian society, and facilitated the acrobatics and exuberant staging with great flexibility.
