Design Statement

Detroit, Detroit, Detroit.

Detroit native designs a production of "Detroit" which plays to a Detroit audience.

My intent was to create a world of visual tension and distress. To do this I researched Detroit's Ruins photography, sometimes called ruin porn, which is a recent movement in photography that takes the decline of the built-environment as its subject. For this production I used the idea of Ruins photography as a reflection of the characters’ suburban angst related to upward mobility, spousal relationships and economic anxiety.

Images of Ruins were used to create the floor and city skyline backdrop for the production. The painted floor image is of grass and moss growing inside of an abandoned building, and piles of cracked cement. The edges of the painted floor were trimmed with grass that appeared to be melting off the stage. The backdrop, which was black and white, was a white city skyline against a black sky made up of the skeletal remains of a Detroit Factory.

In the play, one of the homes is destroyed by fire. Projections were used to stimulate this affect. We filmed an actual burning of a scale model of the production set for this special affect.
