White blaze of the morning
Category: Lighting Design
The production “White Blaze of the morning” is a “New- writing” drama production, in which the director intended to devised the piece not only in a verbal text but also with body movement. The set design gave a relative open space for the moving bodies with an abstract and symbolic arch, giving a rather open ground for the lighting to express and explore.
“Self vs the Environment” is one of the main theme in the play. In the text, the skin of bodies is described as the thin layer that separate the mind within the body and the outside; When the characters were suffered from the invisible "itching - pain" throughout the play , it gave a very interesting metaphor on “Individual against Society” . Hence provide me the idea that, the characters are the present individuals, while the lights are the subtle layer of the "invisible-present".
In this production, rather that giving special colors on the present of the surrounding society and also the supernatural forces suggested from the text, the choice was to stated on white and clear throughout, to give a more neutral and open interpretation on these power that the characters were facing. Rather, the changes are mainly on the form and shapes of lights, to suggest specific moments the characters encountered which leads them to the new insights.
One of the example was, at the beginning of the play, the girl looked out through the window of her bedroom. The blaze (or the light ) cut through the boundary, between the inside and the outside, and the present of the light which tightly surround the characters' body, is subtlety suggesting such relation.
