Design Statement

Core Concept: The death of culture

The protagonist, Professor Lau, traps himself in his own study for 5 years, feeling traumatized by an accident: five years ago, Professor Lau wished to publish his research results, but he got bluntly rejected by the editor with the reason "No market!". Bursting with anger, Professor Lau raved at the editor, who was then accidentally killed by piles of fallen books. Professor Lau feels endless guilt because of the accident.

The huge amount of shredded paper and books on the centre stage symbolizes the social institutions in which the mass media controls the taste of the general public, creating a vicious cycle and pathetic phenomenon of generating trashy writing and printed materials.

The oppressively tall bookshelf gives a shape to the psychological state of endless guilt that the protagonist lives in. The hanging clock and the paper shredding machine give a sense of “time is like a river”, representing the destruction of culture and the forgotten significance of knowledge.

The boundary between the stage and the auditorium is blurred, allowing the spectators to be surrounded by the installation, suggesting that the spectators have entered the professor's study, which is also his torn and conflicting mental space. In the auditorium, all the seats have been removed, and replaced by boxes of books which are arranged like large river cobbles, inviting the audience to keep an aesthetic distance with the performance and to reflect on "How can people defend the meaningful inheritance of culture under the overwhelming mentality of consumerism and market-oriented economy ?"
