Design Statement

Set inside the depths of a forgotten psychiatric ward, JARRING highlights a woman obsessed with mason jars, exploring the untold stories of forgotten lives and how they are preserved or destroyed. Performed in the claustrophobic basement kitchen of an abandoned Lower East Side building in New York City, the site-specific solo show led twenty-two audience members into a transformative underground space. Metal shelving units lined the room, holding hundreds of mason jars, each meticulously labeled and filled with ashes of human remains. We were all excited by honoring the unique architecture of the room and embracing its many imperfections and challenges - filling an industrial metal sink with dirt and wilted plants, transforming an old broken refrigerator into a bed, and letting the abnormally low vaulted ceiling help confine the intimate space. Because the lighting and scenic elements felt so connected, we worked carefully to activate the room with only practical light sources, providing a warm incandescent glow within such a grim, unsettling environment.
