Design Statement

The kind of plays that attract me most are the ones that hide a secret - something elusive and intriguing, yet very important, because it holds a key.
Sarah Ruhl’s Eurydice in Underworld offers a haunting and enigmatic modern version of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. The director Stayko Murdjev and I spent many ours pondering on the riddles of the play. The whimsical characters of the Rocks and the King of the Underworld triggered our imaginations in radicaly different directions. The costumes, that evolved through dozens of sketches were a mix of contemporary fashion replika, antiquity cliche, masks, puppets. The underworld characters worked with acrobatic gears, monocycle, rollers, stilts.
The set was minimalistic – huge concrete walls and a shallow pool, separated from the audience by a water curtain.
Upstage, the space was defined by a big black mirror wall. During the performance, the wall opened along the diagonal to create an ascending narrow path.
