Design Statement

Il Mondo Della Luna is the first Science Fiction Opera from 18th century. I was curious how people imagined the world of the moon back in those days because it must have been different from what we think now in 21st century. Thus the main inspiration of costume design was science fiction novels. My journey started with exploring imagination from 18th century.
No wonder, the world they imagined was very different. Exaggeration and repetition of existing elements were the keys. I took the parts from them and tried to show the lunatic world, especially for the act 2.
Act 1 is the normal world. It consists of authentic 18th century costumes in pale color. In contrast with it, act 2 which is the fake world of the moon poorly created by Ecclitico is exaggerated and colorful. The costumes of act2 are still based on silhouettes of the time period, but extremely exaggerated. I also used more colors and patterns contrary to subtle and delicate costumes of act 1 in order to emphasize the differences of the reality and the imagination.
