You can’t Take it with You

Category: Set Design, Projection and multi-media Design

Design Statement

The story of You can’t Take it with You is set in a very particular place and time period, New York City circa 1935. In addition, the setting is even more specific, a Victorian or Edwardian house located in Upper West Side neighborhood of Manhattan. I tried to recreate the real layout of the narrow townhouse in my set design for the show. In addition, I carefully recreated the specific features such as paintings, books, personal items, various décor pieces and furniture pieces specifically mentioned in the set and added by the director, Blair Williams, and myself. The intricate Edwardian wallpaper was painted on the set; that took 7 layers of painted backgrounds and patterns. To enhance the realistic nature of the set I decided to use time lapse moving images of the river projected behind the window.
