Design Statement

The dance piece is inspired by a legend told by the mother of CHENG Tsung-lung, artistic director of Cloud Gate 2. A legendary figure in the 1960s from Bangka, “Thirteen Tongues” was a street artist lauded for his remarkable acts portraying multiple roles, imitating characters of male, female, old and young, telling stories and anecdotes of the past and present.
The projection design intends to break with conventions in theatre. The images are not projected on the projection screen, but are molded into spells gliding from the floor to the Cyclorama, a massive Koi roving on the Borders and around the stage, or images overflowing onto the Proscenium. Working with, against, or around the lighting design, projection echoes the continuous and rapid variations of Bangka with irregular forms and conveys the unique and vigorous vitality of the oldest district in Taipei with exuberant choices of color.
