The Beautiful Ones is a Music and Physical Theatre piece about how space shape the behavior of human beings. Living in Hong Kong, one of the densest city in the world, the production team ironically facing the same problem of space and resources.
We Draman Black Box Theatre is located inside an Industrial building in Hong Kong, the acting area of the production is only 3.8m X 9m, while the rigging position is only 2.5m from the floor. The venue come with 12 dimmers and 6 LED PAR only. The government regards that as an illegal performance space as it doesn’t fulfill a lots of requirements for a license.
To create different effects in the performance, two short throw projectors are used to cover the whole acting area, which allows me to create different partition of space which resonance the theme of the creation.
I also take advantage of the possibility of video projection to shutter space like what we do with moving lights, and furthermore to draw lines and present different animate patterns.
This design, which combine a technical solution to a limited space and the artistic vision of the use of projection in theatre production is heavily driven by the fact that Hong Kong lacks small and affordable theatre space for small company. But yet, this is how we did it.
