Design Statement

THE WEATHER CAFÉ was an immersive experiential café based in Leeds, UK. Inside, the shifting environment evolved through digital technologies that responded to the changing climate outside. The wind blew, the rain fell and thick clouds unfolded around the audience. THE WEATHER CAFÉ presented the voices of over 100 people living and connected to Leeds. The café acted as a barometer to reflect the emotional climate of the city and provided a free space of contemplation in the city. The event attracted over 2500 visitors in three weeks.

Working with creative technologist Daniel John Jones and composer James Bulley, the piece was inspired by the weather conditions of the moment. The sound responded to the shifting winds, the light changed with the visibility of the sky and the rain fell with the rising humidity – the space became its own digital microclimate. Real grass and moss covered the floors and walls to create a biologically living space .

David Shearing

David is an artist and production designer whose practice operates as a hybrid among fine art, installation and performance. His work challenges audiences to reconsider their relationships to each other and their environment. He works in collaboration with other artists to explore the material elements of light, sound, bodies, and ecological design to immerse and engage audiences. David is interested in event as design, creating temporary environments such as ‘THE WEATHER CAFÉ’ which uses design to invite audiences to consider their everyday behaviors . He is interested in how scenography can be used to engage those not likely to experience traditional forms of theatre. Recent work includes ‘The Dock’ (2016) at The Lowry, a temporary performance space and bar in the theatre’s scene dock. In 2014 David was awarded a competitive Sky Academy Arts Scholarship to develop ‘THE WEATHER MACHINE’ with the West Yorkshire Playhouse that culminated in a short Sky Arts documentary with Melvyn Bragg.

David studied for an MA in Performance Design and Practice (Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London). He writes and talks on immersive experience having completed a PhD in ‘Audience Immersion and the Experience of Scenography’, University of Leeds, (2015). www.davidshearing.com
