Design Statement

The Last Days of the Old Wild Boy, an original work by Rinde Eckert devised in conjunction with the creative team and cast, was developed from a story of a man raised by wolves who finds himself toward the end of his life at the top of the food chain. Powerful and erudite, the old wild boy longs for a return to the wildness of the wolf he once was—but how does one recover one’s original, less conditioned or acculturated self? The Last Days of the Old Wild Boy was a product of the creative team thinking about nature and culture; about the self and the world that surrounds us.
The set became an essential component of this world, a performer. It became the visual identity for the work, anchored in 152 small wooden benches that measure 10.5” x 18” x 8”. The benches were unfinished, in their natural state, but at the same time, they were hand-crafted and “man-made.” The performers arranged them and rearranged them organically as a pile of rubble, or geometrically to form vertical structures, as the play became more “civilized”. As the performance developed, the actors literally sculpted the set before our eyes.
