Rhinoceros is an enormous play on many different levels. The biggest challenge of designing this play in a small black box was how to take advantage of the intimacy of the space. We established a poetic, muscular world. Instead of hiding or decorating the space, we wanted to be honest with it. The lighting fixtures, the cables, the speakers, the theatre structures, every single component became a part of the scenery.
When actors were climbing over the truss pieces, with the lighting and the sound, you could feel the whole space shake, that was the feeling that we wanted to give to the audience. And for the second half, we moved parts of the audience onto the stage. We turned the space into an arena. Everybody in the house was a witness to the transformation of the rhinoceros.
