Design Statement

The thrill of designing from a classic text is how one uses visual story telling to illuminate and connect to the audience. It is lifting a story from time, with attitudes that have changed, and reframing it for the audience to observe afresh.

With The Importance of Being Earnest I began, as many have before, with Aubrey Beardsley to move the story away from the traditional drawing room to a realm that commented more on the human behaviours at play. The idea of the peacock came quickly and became a motif that integrating Algernon’s London flat in it’s austere black and white to the burgeoning love that begins the journey of colour.

This journey concludes in the absurd saturation of colour that makes for Earnest’s country garden of Eden which is revealed before us as the peacock fan is closed. The circular shape -the whole world of the play- is magnified by the curved proscenium and cyclorama.

The costumes are born in Victorian silhouette and connected to the narrative and the character rather than an authentic representation of period. This is most present in Lady Bracknell, whose visual exaggeration become a grotesque parody of the pretension and dishonesty she represents.
