Design Statement

This play is both delicate and epic. Two people alone in a small room... but in a big theatre. Working in a 1000 seat thrust hall, the epic is easy to pull off but the delicate is harder to achieve. How do two actors not get lost in this cavernous space? Fortunately, the very creative set by Misha Kachman solved most of that challenge. The massive exterior window wall of a NYC warehouse played like the best cyclorama ever, allowing me to contract and expand each moment visually as needed. Inside the rehearsal studio we had three layers of lighting realities: the harsh overhead fluorescent fixtures, the old romantic rehearsal lights, and the world sliding into abstraction with the uncertainty of whether Vanda is an actress or goddess. We wanted to keep the audience off balance. Both the director and playwright moved us through the emotional world of auditions, to seduction, to domination, and eventually to terror.
