Design Statement

An experimental collaborative performance exploring the boundaries of perceptive and somatic restriction, and the struggle to overcome them.
Exploring visceral emotions ranging from frustration, rage, and helplessness with the desire of hopeful change and promise.
The physical design draws from sensory deprivation, institutional restraints, and body augmenting prosthesis that aid or hinder natural body mechanics. Creating an insular world where the psychological has become a physical struggle, playing with the mechanics of movement and freedom of form and expression, under the tightening restrictions of an enveloping outside force.
In an aim to shift costume from an aesthetic enhancement of narrative and movement, I reversed the process. Creating the costume first, the parameters of the performance were redefined, via the somatic restricions. Superficial conceptual information was comunicated to the performer to allow her the freedom to form her own narrative. Her experience within the costume was integral to the final coreography.

Zepur Agopyan

Coming from a solid visual art/ making background, I find the creative and collaborative process thoroughly engaging and exciting, finding new opportunities of expression in every new medium.
Having studied visual art as a sculptor/ glass blower at Sydney University's College of the Arts, I was drawn to the creative possibilities of designing sculpture for the human form. Completing a Diploma of Theatre Costume at TAFE N.S.W, the world of performance opened up. Later undertaking a Masters of Scenography at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama to better facilitate my transition to design. Practical experience gained from visual arts, working within Opera Australia, Sydney Theatre Company, feature film, and television, provided skills and experience that I continually draw on when designing.
Initially designing for National Dance Company Wales's They Seek to Find The Happiness They Seem, and Encore, more recently Aberystwyth Mon Amour, a theatrical Noir detective story, and Donald Muhammad Trump, a short satirical film. Contendō was the first performance design I conceived and produced, working to subvert the traditional design paradigm to challenge the creative possibilities of the performance.
