Design Statement

Utanon onstage!
I started my design concept with a question “how would I design an “utan” (vegetable) costume in a musical play?” I decided to combine arts and science to produce a concrete costume and makeup design.

From arts category I used the concept of coloring book. I incorporated outlines and colorful palette to show the beauty of vegetables and make it more attractive to the eyes of the audience especially to the children. To complete the whole image of the vegetables I carefully researched the science behind different parts of vegetables from root, stem, flower, leaves and fruit. I wanted to create an utan costume as a whole vegetable plant representing living things in a place called “Sariwa” (fresh), known as vegetable land. I also used different kinds of fabrics, like satin, organza, chiffon, tapestry, and abaca, one of the local fabrics in the Philippines to show vegetable colors and textures.
