Design Statement

Though based on the Brechtian film, Dave Bond and I collaborated on a fresh approach - reading the text as a morality tale presenting a simple truth: the best people will commit the most heinous acts if it is socially acceptable. The rain at the beginning quenches the apocalyptic fire of the end, and evokes a never-ending cycle in a space created by three main design elements. The road, bearing our singular homage to Van Trier - ELM STREET, has its singular entry point in an operatic-like statement road tunnel. An abandoned mining structure serves as the dead end and reinforces the one-time boom of the town now bust. Overhead, the branches of the apple orchard in all seasons undeniably reference man’s fall into darkness. Among the orchard branches hang the key props for the show, hovering like thoughts still forming until their crucial moment in the story.
