Design Statement

My practice explores the relationship among body, space, movement and light. I am interested in combining these elements to create illusions that question what we perceive.
Two Truths are Told is a performance based on perception and perceived realities. The piece was created in response to the moment in Shakespeare’s Macbeth where Banquo and Macbeth encounter the weird sisters. The two characters experience the same situation, however they interpret this event differently.
Three dancers perform behind a backlit-frosted screen, creating a divide between the audience and the performers. Two different performances emerge; the real one behind the screen, and an abstracted version, created on the screen by back lighting. Multiple light sources fragment the shadows of the performers, where primary colours mix and layer to create a Kaleidoscopic effect where “other worldly” figures blend into one another, highlighting the intrinsic relationship among costume, set and light.

Clare McGarrigle

I studied Embroidery at Manchester Metropolitan University, during this time I undertook a teaching placement on the Art and Design Foundation Course at Leeds College of Art, where I later held a part-time role for 10 years.
Early within my career I understood the importance of redeveloping a creative practice alongside teaching, where the two could feed into and enhance one another. I therefore undertook internships to identify the direction I wanted to take.
I initially interned with London School of Samba, making costumes for their Notting Hill Carnival performance, and went on to work on a number of productions for the Royal Stratford East Theatre, The Royal Court Theatre and Nuffield Theatre as a freelance costume maker.
In 2011 I started the part-time MA in Costume Design for Performance at London College of Fashion, where I was introduced to character and narrative analysis using these as a basis for research to develop designs for costume and performance.
Since graduation, I have worked with Lola Maury Dance, IJAD Dance, SKAdooSH Dance, Extant and Spectra Ensemble, designing costumes for dance and interactive performance. Recently I have undertaken the role of a Senior Lecturer on Manchester Metropolitan University’s Art and Design Foundation Course.
