Closed Meeting
Thinking Costume is a two-day research seminar that brings together a multidisciplinary group of researchers and practitioners working on costume-related and costume-led research projects. The seminar aims to offer peer-support for early career researchers and academicsconducting research in the field of costume or in related artistic fields involving dress and performance in theatre, film and media. The seminar focuses on the development of their research work by inviting participants to ‘think about and through costume’ and provides peer tutoring, feedback and a forum for dialogue and exchange of ideas. It aims to establish a networking practice for sharing the latest news, trends and enquiries in costume research, generating opportunities for future research collaborations, and offering critical feedback by international and distinguished peers.Proposals included in the programme were selected through a blind peer-review process.
The seminar is organized as a collaboration of the “Costume Methodologies” research project (Aalto University, Finland) with the OISTAT Costume Design Group (CDG), which is a partner to the project. CDG members will take an active role as respondents to the presentations, supporting the integration of theory and practice.

Sofia Pantouvaki, PhD, is a Greek scenographer and Professor of Costume Design at Aalto University, Finland. Her design credits include 80 theatre, film, opera and dance productions in European venues. She is Vice-Head for Research, OISTAT Costume Design Group; Editor, Studies in Costume and Performance; Co-Convener, Critical Costume and IFTR Scenography WG. She was the WSD2013 Curator for Costume Design; Associate Curator, Costume in Action; and Co-Curator, Finnish Student exhibit (Gold Medal PQ’15). She lectures and publishes internationally, and leads a research project on Costume Methodologies.
